To date, UPLC®-TOF-MS has found limited application in plant metabolomics. The authors have demonstrated its potential by achieving the discrimination of wounded and unwounded Arabidopsis specimens based on the induction of low abundant key biomarkers. The generic character of the method provided a broad survey of all metabolome changes that are related to wounding and allowed the identification of new wound-induced metabolites. These compounds (oxylipins) are known to act in defense signaling mechanisms. Their detection revealed a good coherence between the metabolomic data and the biological problem studied. Such an approach might be extended to the study of other stress-induced response phenomena in plants.
